Dr. Dernell received his DVM from the University of Illinois in 1985. After spending 5 years in mixed animal and small animal practice in Colorado, he did a residency in small animal surgery and Masters Degree in veterinary science at Washington State University. He then returned to Colorado where he did both clinical and research fellowships in surgical oncology before accepting a faculty position at Colorado State University. He became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgery in 1994. Dr. Dernell spent 15 years at CSU as an assistant, then associate professor in surgical oncology splitting his time and focus between clinical service teaching and research. Dr. Dernell also served as the chief of the Clinical Oncology Service and as an assistant department chair for the Clinical Sciences Department at CSU. Dr. Dernell returned to WSU in 2008 to assume the role of chair of the Veterinary Clinical Sciences department.
Dr. Dernell is the author of over 150 scientific articles, abstracts and book chapters related to oncology, treatment of infection and reconstructive surgery including editing an edition of Clinical Techniques in Veterinary Medicine on surgical oncology. Dr. Dernell has given over 250 continuing education and scientific presentations including national meetings such as the ACVS, North American Veterinary Conference, Western States Veterinary Conference and annual meetings of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association. He has spoken internationally in England, Brazil, Japan and Canada on topics pertinent to oncology and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Dernell is a member of numerous local, national and international veterinary and human medical societies including the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Cancer Society. He has served on a number of committees within the ACVS. Dr. Dernell has been honored with awards in research, teaching and scientific presentation.
Dr. Dernell's clinical and research efforts have been concentrated in the treatment of sarcomas, drug delivery and animal modeling of cancer disease and treatment.
